The original concept for this piece featured the subject leaning against a unicorn. Halfway through the drawing, however, I decided the unicorn wasn't working. Rather than trying to salvage it, I tore away a large section of the paper and started reimagining the composition.
By that point, I had already altered the subject's eye colour from the original reference, giving her an intense, almost piercing stare. The more I looked at it, the less she resembled a dreamlike figure and the more she appeared to be someone you would not want to cross.
The unicorn disappeared. A sword took its place.
What began as something gentle evolved into something altogether different: a portrait of strength, confidence, and quiet danger.
